Hello and welcome back to the Pindrop Shop! This is Episode 1 of the Basic Alterations Sewing Skills Series. In this series, I am going to show you how to do some basic alteration and repair skills that you can use on your everyday clothing. This is a great opportunity to work through all of your clothing items that have an issue, and get them fixed and back into your wardrobe.
Today we’re going to take a skirt that is too long and we’re going to hem it to make it shorter.
You will need your skirt, matching thread, sewing machine, and scissors. This tutorial will be for a simple skirt like this. It doesn’t have a lot of fullness, and the hem is wider, closer to 1”.
[Skirts with thin fabrics, linings, and a lot of fullness will be hemmed in a different way. Check out our other videos on hemming a formal dress to see that method of hemming.]
First you can try on your skirt and fold up the hem to where you think you’d like the skirt to end. Pin it up so you can see if you like the length. Adjust if needed, and once you’re happy with how it looks, you can take it off and we’ll begin the process.
