How to Hem a Formal Dress with Horsehair Hem

Prom season and weddings are upon us!  The most commonly needed formal alterations is hemming to make the dress shorter.  Sometimes it's fairly straight - forward, but sometimes different hems can be encountered.  On this gown, a horsehair webbing was used.  I'm going to show you how to shorten the dress and move the horsehair up to where it needs to be.

You can watch each step of hemming this dress, so that you know what to do before you make the first cut.

Hope you enjoy, and I'd love to hear if this helped you hem a formal dress with horsehair at the bottom.

Our wooden Tailor's Clappers are the sewing tool you didn't know you needed.  You can achieve perfectly pressed seams and hems with your iron and the help of a tailor's clapper.

Tailor's clapper details:

Unfinished hardwood (bitternut hickory or other) absorbs the heat and moisture from your newly pressed fabric, resulting in a perfectly crisp seam.
